    Calm Down with Lemon Balm

    Suzy-Cohen-1_2Dear Pharmacist,
I often feel worried and anxious, and I don’t sleep well. I know I’m a nervous wreck, but I refuse tranquilizers because they are addictive. I also have a weak stomach. Is there anything natural?
    –D.E. Idaho Falls, Idaho

Answer: There are lots of choices for these ailments, and my favorite is lemon balm (Melissa officinalis). For centuries, it’s helped relieve the digestive woes of many folks feeling stressed-out. It’s a member of the mint family and the coolest thing about lemon balm is that one of it’s primary ingredients is citronella, an essential oil frequently used in mosquito-repellent candles. Lemon balm also contains anti-microbial tannins and eugenol which helps reduce muscle spasms. The scientific literature I’ve read shows that lemon balm herb can relax you, help you sleep, relieve pain and soothe stomach discomfort (gas, bloating and nausea).
Another lovely thing about lemon balm is its ability to mildly dilate your blood vessels and lower blood pressure. This is a very subtle benefit so don’t toss out your BP meds okay! Guess what else? It can improve eczema and other skin conditions. Researchers found that lemon balm prevents spreading of the herpes simplex viruses (HSV), including the shingles and cold sore type. In a study on cold sores, lemon balm shortened duration and lessened recurrence of HSV infections. This is just phenomenal! Steep 3 tablespoons of dried herb into a cup of hot water for 15 minutes. Cool and apply the tea-water to your sores with gauze. Prepared “lemon balm cream” is also sold online and at some health food stores.
If you want to try lemon balm, you have lots of choices. You can buy an essential oil for external use only. Sniff before bedtime to prevent nightmares in children, or take a whiff to instantly relieve your anxiety (like if your plane hits turbulence or your editor calls and says, “Where’s your column, it was due yesterday, hmm?”). Lavender works well for this indication too.
For many years, I was a nursing home Consultant Pharmacist and I see a use for lemon balm in that setting too. It’s a natural way to help calm dementia patients experiencing agitation, or “Sundowning” without having to resort to potent mind-bending meds. You can also buy it in commercially prepared formulas, either by itself, or in combination with other calming herbs such as valerian, hops and chamomile; these are intended for sleep. You can buy prepared teas. I buy the dried herb in bulk. I steep 3 tablespoons of it into 2 cups of boiling water for 10 minutes and then add fresh spearmint leaves and honey. It has a light and fresh citrus-mint flavor. You can chill the tea and sip all day to improve mood, relieve PMS symptoms and regulate thyroid hormone. Long live lemon balm, for it can instantly soothe your stress.
    Did You Know?
Facial creams and serums that contain niacin (or niacinamide) soften fine lines, acne and skin blemishes.

    (sent via Shareaholic)

Lemon Balm (Melissa officinalis) is a member of the Lamiaceae (Mint) Family. Melissa, the genus name is from the Latin melisso phyllum, meaning, “honey bee” as it is a favorite flower of bees. The species name officinalis means that the herb has long been used by apothecaries.

Lemon balm also goes by the folk names Balm, Bee Balm, Dropsy Plant, Heart’s Delight, Melissa, and “Elixir of Life” (a name given by Paracelsus). Lemon balm was widely used in ancient Greek and Rome. This herb was sacred in the temple of Diana, and priestesses of Aphrodite were called Melissa. Avicenna, the great Arab physician (980-1037) said, Lemon Balm “causeth the mind and heart to be merry.”

The above-ground portion of the place is used as an antibacterial, antidepressant, antihistamine, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antispasmodic, antiviral, aromatic, carminative, cephalic, chologogue, diaphoretic, digestive, emmenagogoue, febrifuge, hypotensive (mild), nervine, parturient, rejuvenative, sedative, stomachic, tonic, and vasodilator.

Lemon Balm is used to treat allergies, amenorrhea, anxiety, asthma, attention deficit, bronchitis, chicken pox, chronic fatigue, colic, colds, depression, Fever, flatulence, Flu, Grave’s disease, headaches, herpes, homesickness, hyperactivity, hypertension, hysteria, indigestion, insomnia, menstrual cramps, migraine, mumps, muscle spasms, nausea, nervousness, Newcastle disease, nightmares, heart palpitations due to nerves, pain, restlessness, senility, shingles, smallpox, stomachache, and teething. Lemon balm clears heat, calms the heart, cleans the liver, improves chi circulation and lifts the spirits. German studies indicate lemon balm’s essential oils help protect the cerebrum from excess external stimuli.

    Luscious Lip Balm Formula

    Luscious Lip Balm Formula

This recipe is an excerpt from Rosemary Gladstar’s Herbs for Natural Beauty, by Rosemary Gladstar.

No book of cosmetic recipes would be complete without instructions on how to make lip balm, a deliciously simple salve used to anoint and moisten those luscious lips.

Alkanet, a lovely garden flower, is not necessary in the lip balm, but adds a rich red color as well as its protective, emollient properties. A smaller amount of alkanet to oil will soften the color to pink or watermelon red.

This recipe calls for a cup of oil. One cup of lip balm makes a lot of ¼ -ounce containers enough to supply your entire neighborhood with lip balm for a lifetime! You might wish to cut this recipe in half.

    Ingredients
    1/8 ounce alkanet root (optional)
1 cup apricot, almond, or grapeseed oil
    ¼ cup beeswax
    1 tablespoon honey
a few drops of pure essential oil to taste (orange, wintergreen, mints, vanilla, and rose are my favorites)

    1. If using alkanet, simmer the root over low heat in a double boiler in oil for about 15-20 minutes, or until the oil has turned a deep red/black color. The deeper the color the redder the oil will be when strained and bottled. Strain through a double layer of cheesecloth or a fine meshed strainer. If using other emollient herbs, simmer in oil in double boiler over low heat for 20-30 minutes. Strain.

    2. Add beeswax, honey, and essential oil. A taste test here is appropriate. Then, test for consistency by placing a tablespoon of the oil in the freezer for 5 minutes. If the test batch is too hard, add a bit more oil to soften; if it is too soft, add more beeswax to harden.

    3. Don’t let the mixture cool too much before pouring. If the lip balm begins to solidify and clings to the edges of the pot or measuring cup, quickly reheat the oil. Pour into ¼-or ½-ounce containers and let cool thoroughly before placing lids.

“DIY Episode #2- Natural Lip Balm”

    |
    Mapuana  to me, Mary

Here’s 2 videos as a demo on the how to make lip balm and since the amount of ingredients are for a large batch,  I’ll be sending a couple of sample recipes for much smaller batches from 3 different books on how to make lipstick/balm/gloss.  Once all is melted you could add in the rose mica to a recipe you like for a colored lipstick/balm/gloss.  As shown in the other video, you could use the same recipe for making a creme cheek color as well.  I guess it’ll depend on how much rose mica you add in.  At least the colors will match.

The 3 recipes by Janice Cox uses the least amounts of ingredients and makes the smallest batches I could find.  I use old round containers that I saved from eye cream and lip balms.  I also got some for $1-2 from the drug store.
    COCONUT-ALMOND LIP GLOSS
(Natural Beauty at Home by Janice Cox)
This is a solid, waxy gloss that can even be formed into a lipstick.  You can purchase empty lipstick containers or use old ones that have been cleaned out.  Pour the melted gloss into these containers and allow to cool completely.

    1 tsp. coconut oil
    1 tsp. almond oil
    1/2 tsp. grated beeswax

ALMOND AND COCOA BUTTER LIP GLOSS

    1/2 tsp. grated beeswax
1 tsp. cocoa butter (you may want to grate if using solid cocoa butter)
    1 tsp. almond oil

USE THE SAME INSTRUCTIONS FOR BOTH RECIPES ABOVE:
Mix together the coconut oil, almond oil, and beeswax.  Melt the ingredients in either the microwave for 1-2 mins on High (watch closely) or place the mixture in a double boiler or water bath on the stove top.  Pour into a clean lip gloss contianer and cool completely, approximately 20 mins.  Rub into your lips and enjoy!

*You could sub the non petroleum jelly for the recipe below:
    ALOE VERA LIP GLOSS
(Natural Beauty At Home by Janice Cox)
Aloe vera makes a soothing lip gloss with a very high moisture content.  I like to use this gloss in the summer after my lips have spent time in the sun.

    1 tsp. aloe vera gel
    1/2 tsp. coconut oil
    1 tsp. petroleum jelly (optional)

Mix together all three ingredients in a shallow dish or cup using the back of a teaspoon.  Gently heat the mixture until the coconut oil has melted.  (I do mine in the microwave on High for 30 seconds to 1 min.)  Pour the melted mixture into a lip gloss container or clean pillbox (both available at the drugstore)  Cool completely, until the mixture is cool to the touch and solid.  This takes about 10-20 mins.  You can speed up the cooling time by using the refrigerator.  Rub into your lips and enjoy!

    BEESWAX LIPSTICK
(Natural Beauty at Home by Janice Cox)
These are super little sticks to keep with you and use throughout the day, either alone or under your favorite lipstick.  I also rub a bit on my heels at night to keep them soft (of course, not the same stick I use on my lips).  Use them anywhere you can use a little extra conditioning.

    1/4 cup grated beeswax
3 tbls. vegetable shortening (I’d think coconut oil would substitute well for raw foodies)
    2 tbls. cocoa butter
1 tbls. light oil ( I use almond oil)

Mix together all the ingredients in an oven proof container.  Heat the mixture gently in the microwave for 1-2 mins. on High or in a double boiler or water bath on the stove top, until everything is melted and you have a pale golden liquid.  Pour the melted mixture into a shallow greased pan or cardboard box lined with foil.  (I use empty tea boxes.)  Allow the mixture to cool, then cut into lipsticks.

I’ve only made the Coconut-Almond Lip Gloss but used Jojoba in place of the almond oil.  It was quick and very easy to make, it came out ok and it serves it’s purpose. I don’t have anything else to compare it with tho, and I have no experience in making the others so I couldn’t say.
*BECAUSE NO PRESERVATIVES ARE CALLED FOR IN THESE RECIPES, PLEASE KEEP THE BATCHES SMALL AND USE RIGHT AWAY.  IF NOT, I SUGGEST KEEPING IT IN THE FRIDGE!

    Aloha No~Mapuan
