One of the most versatile oils, lavender is well known for its aromatic properties and ability to calm and relax the body and mind. It can also be used to relieve skin irritation (perfect for cold winter months) – and soothes cuts and burns. I always carry lavender and just used it this week to relieve a minor burn suffered at Starbucks, when my hot tea spilled. No redness, sting or inflammation occurred.
Lavender may also be added to favorite recipes and beverages to enhance flavor! Lavender water, tea and chocolate are my favorites (only in glass or stainless steel).
Peppermint
Naturally refreshing, peppermint is a great way to achieve mentally clarity, reduce fatigue and increase energy before a workout. It aids digestion and can be added to tea, water or food. I always carry peppermint when I travel to relieve motion sickness (especially in India or NYC cabs!), energize after a long flight and relieve nasal congestion.
Lemon
Also a very versatile oil, lemon can be used to clean and disinfect surfaces and packs a double punch as an incredibly uplifting and energizing scent for body and mind. The powerful antioxidant d-limonene supports healthy immune system function. Add to a variety of foods and beverages to create flavor. Lemon oil acts to alkalize the digestive tract and is a great substitute for lemon water when you don’t have real lemons to squeeze.

Because I’m allergic to dust mites, I make a Linen Spray in a 2oz. spray bottle adding 50% organic distilled white vinegar which immediately kills mites, bacteria, viruses, fungi, plus 50% water, 3 drops Lavender EO, and 3 drops Lemongrass EO. The EO’s are both anti-bacterial and used as disinfectants. I spray several times a week. This concoction smells fresh and clean when sprayed, no overwhelming vinegar smell. If sprayed after waking, by bed time there will be no scent at all. This multi-purpose spray can be used to disinfect anything!

One of the most popular articles we’ve ever put on Care2 is “Lavender Linen Water.” People seem to have a natural inclination toward this sweet, woody aroma. Lavender has age-old housekeeping uses and gifts, but the whys and wherefores have longs since been lost as have so many of the old folkways. Here are some of those whys and wherefores about lavender with some formulas to put it into wonderful use:
Anti-Bacterial Spray
Lavender contains up to 50 percent of an ingredient called linalool which kills bacteria and viruses. Put 20 drops of pure essential oil of lavender in 1 cup of water, and spray the air, table tops, door knobs, etc., anywhere you would usually use a disinfectant.
Room Aromatherapy
Lavender contains esters and aldehydes that help to regulate your moods, and it is widely used by herbalists to treat depression. Place a few drops in a water vaporizer, or on a light bulb.
Lavender Tense-Muscle Massage Oil
Because lavender contains ingredients such as aldehydes that help to reduce inflammation, and it helps relax tense muscles. Add a few drops to 1 teaspoon of a good carrier oil such as olive or grapeseed (available in the health food store).
(NaturalNews) Many herbs have been shown to prevent hair loss and enable hair to grow. Thinning hair, or alopecia, is a condition that is caused by aging and also genetics. Nutritional deficiencies can also cause hair loss. Herbs have been used for thousands of years to help regrow hair. Taken internally or applied to the scalp, herbs are a gentle and natural way to prevent hair loss and stimulate hair growth.
Polygonum Multiflorum is Used to Recolor and Regrow Hair
Polygonum is known in Chinese medicine as He Shou Wu. For centuries this herb has been used to treat hair loss. Recently, the American Botanical Council reported that this herb may be useful to restore color to graying hair, as well as stimulating hair growth.
Ginseng Stimulates Hair Growth
Ginseng is another herb long used in Chinese medicine. The herb is an adaptogen, helping the body adapt to stress, which is known to be a cause of hair loss. Ginseng is found in shampoos as well as tinctures that can be taken internally.
Lavender Stimulates the Scalp
Lavender oils can be applied to the hair and massaged into the scalp. The herb draws the blood to the scalp, which helps prevent hair loss.
Thorn Apple Prevents Hair Loss
Thorn Apple, also known as Jimsonweed, is a toxic herb that has been shown to help regrow hair. Used in Chinese herbal medicine for thousands of years to treat digestive disorders and even tuberculosis, Thorn Apple contains toxins known as scopolamine and hyoscyamine. The toxic alkaloids are also used in medicine as a gastric antispasmodic. The dried leaves are used to treat cough. Drinking fruit from the juice staves off hair loss, but high doses can cause irregular heartbeat and even coma.
Dong Quai Restores Hormonal Balance and Grows Hair
Known as Dong Quai in Chinese medicine, the herb Angelica is used to stop hair loss. The active ingredient is an herbal form of a testosterone stimulant, called a phytotestosterone.
Aloe Vera Gel Soothes the Scalp
The gel from the Aloe Vera plant soothes skin and acts as an anti-inflammatory when applied externally. By massaging the gel into the scalp, the pH balance of the scalp is restored and this helps regrow hair. Aloe also helps the hair retain water, and since one quarter of the hair is made up of water, this important function of Aloe Vera enables hair to remain nourished.
