Subject: Sweets without the guilt
“Traveling around the country has confirmed
for me that most people love their sweets…
In fact, some might even be addicted.
I know, it’s hard to give them up.
I used to LOVE brownies… LOL!
I like to say that those who are addicted
to sugar are lacking sweetness in their
life.
Interesting right?
Are you?
But what if I could give you some options
to help satisfy your sweet tooth, but
keep you away from the stuff you know isn’t
the best for you.
Here are 5 great options for sweeteners that
are better than the processed junk you’ll
find in most packaged foods.
1. Fruit! I know it’s simple, but the best
sweetener known to man is sweet fruit.
Bananas, dates and pineapple are some of
the sweetest that are readily available.
Snack on ‘em alone or add them to your
recipes.
Freeze some bananas and then put them
through a Greenstar juicer with the nut butter
attachment. Then add some carob chips or
cacao nibs.
You’ll never crave ice cream again.
2. Lucuma Powder. This is a sweet, powdered
South American fruit. Angela Stokes first
turned me on to this low glycemic sweetener
a few years ago.
I love the taste and you can add it to your
chia, oatmeal, cereal, tea, smoothies or
recipes to sweeten it up without the high
insulin boost associated with most concentrated
sweeteners.
3. Mesquite Powder. Mesquite powder is from
the pod of a mesquite tree.
The flavor is sweet, cinnamon-y, and smokey
all in one.
Again, this is a great food to add to your
chia, oatmeal, cereal, tea, smoothies or
other recipes to add a unique flavor and
sweetness.
4. Stevia. This is a green herb that is in
the same family as the sunflower.
The leaves are dried then powdered.
If you’ve ever tired fresh stevia, you know
a little goes a LONG way.
Most people think stevia tastes bitter.
Most stevia does taste this way if it’s
overly processed into a white powder.
In fact, I don’t recommend any white powders.
Flour, sugar, cocaine…
Nada.
The green stevia when used in small amounts
will give just enough sweetness and no
bitterness at all.
This sweetener is great for those who need
to keep their gut and candida in check as
well as those who need to be careful about
their blood sugar levels.
5. Honey. If you’re not a strict vegan,
you can add some honey to your smoothies
and recipes.
Honey has some anti-bacteria properties,
but I mainly use it for pure energy while
I exercise.
Mix a bit with some coconut water and add
it to your running or hiking pack for
electrolytes and glucose when you’re on
the go!
Not making the list are…
Agave.
Why? This is a highly processed sweetener
and is 60-90% fructose.
Fructose, while low on the glycemic index
is the highest thing you can eat on the
FRUCTOSE index.
I know you haven’t heard of the fructose
index yet, but someone’s bound to write
a book about it eventually!
The Glycemic Research Institute had to
stop a trial they were doing with diabetics
in October 2009 because agave was negatively
affecting their health.
Stay away, my friends.
Just because a health expert says it’s good
doesn’t mean it always is.
(me included! though I try my best to get
the best info…)
If you want to try any of these, we have
them in the store and have searched around
for the best quality.
The lucuma and mesquite powders from
Ultimate Superfoods are by far the best
quality we’ve experienced so far.
